Where I grew up, there really weren't any kids that looked much different from me. The only difference between my skin and that of my childhood friends is that most of them get a pretty tan and except for a smattering of freckles that appear on my face and shoulders, I stay as white as a ghost all summer. Since we all looked the same, I suppose there was never any need for the issue of skin colour to come up in a lesson at school - and maybe it did and I simply don't remember - however, my recollection is that my understanding of that topic came from my parents.
I started thinking about this earlier this morning when I read how Tiffany approached this topic in such a beautiful, inspirational way with her students. I really hope that this is on the lesson plan in my old elementary school now, so many years later. I really, really hope.
